1175 Santa Monica Blvd.
The commercial space at 11175 Santa Monica Blvd, in Los Angeles had been unfortunately labeled “The Green Monster” based on its unattractive exterior. A client of Sandstone Properties was interested in this space next to the 405 freeway, but it required an extreme makeover to secure the deal.
Sandstone called upon Shubin + Donaldson who successfully created a progressive design, yet simultaneously presented a new challenge: how to bring this new building design to life. They retained Spin Imaging’s expertise, leaders in ABV (Adhesive Black Vinyl) solution, to build the process of matching various materials and “activate” the design, creating a modern work of art.
The design objective was to mimic a horizontal flow that had previously “dated” the building’s old-fashioned theme. This was achieved by using a high performance, white exterior vinyl produced by 3M, followed by printing multiple tests (CMYK) until the approved color was achieved. There followed multiple layering techniques, tinting, and adding a chrome finish to marry the chrome and blue (a custom product created by Spin Imaging and 3M.)
